Affordable Housing
“The U.S. has a shortage of 7.2 million rental homes affordable and available to renters with extremely low incomes – that is, incomes at or below either the federal poverty guideline or 30% of their area median income, whichever is greater. Only 35 affordable and available rental homes exist for every 100 extremely low-income renter households. Extremely low-income renters face a shortage in every state and major metropolitan area.” - National Low Income Housing Coalition
Why affordable housing matters.
Affordable housing in the United States has become a crisis due to a combination of limited housing supply, rising construction costs, and wages that have not kept pace with increasing rents. At the same time, growing demand, aging housing stock, and insufficient government support have further strained the system.
Seniors across the United States are increasingly struggling to afford housing due to a convergence of rising costs and limited financial flexibility. Many older adults rely on fixed incomes, such as Social Security, which often fail to keep pace with escalating rents and living expenses. At the same time, seniors can be more vulnerable to crime, making safe, stable, and affordable housing even more essential to their well-being.
Stable housing is fundamental to health and well-being. When it is out of reach—or when the strain of affording rent forces individuals to take on multiple jobs—both physical and emotional health can suffer. Children, in particular, thrive academically when they have the stability and security of a consistent home environment.
